Whats the deal with Damage Meters?

Im currently using SWstats when running instances and usually come out on top...After we finish a boss i go ahead and post the rankings etc and so does everyone else and the damage meters are ALWAYS different! Which one to trust? Almost every time im top in SWstats but then some other guy posts his and im like in third...wtf?

Also it seems SWstats is not popular at all since I never get anyone synced and once I did get synced while doing ShadowLabs and the other dude had the same info as me (expected)...

Whats the deal with DmgMeters?

Damage meter addon's use the combat log to record their information. If you are out of range of something that would otherwise be recorded in your combat log, it doesn't get recorded, which is why addon's like DamageMeters and SWstats have the syncing feature.

As far as those types of addons go, I recommend recount over SWstats.

@nasa.gov

I agree with the Recount vote.

Not only does it sync with everyone else rather nicely, but it does a breakdown by character and by damage type. It also tracks a ton of other stuff, like overhealing, deaths, and cc breakage.

Also, it's a good tool to gauge your own dps by showing you exactly how your damage was done, and where you can make improvements (looking at hunter shot rotations/gear switch options).

Damagemeters is just too vanilla and very inconsistent for me, although I've never used SWstats so I can't comment there.

You can also extend the range of your combat log.

Open /WTF/Config.wtf and add these lines :

SET CombatLogRangeCreature “200″
SET CombatLogRangeFriendlyPlayers “200″
SET CombatLogRangeFriendlyPlayersPets “200″
SET CombatLogRangeHostilePlayers “200″
SET CombatLogRangeHostilePlayersPets “200″
SET CombatLogRangeParty “200″
SET CombatLogRangePartyPet “200″
SET CombatDeathLogRange “200″

You are a hunter right?

I bet someone isn't merging pets. This can make a big difference, especially if you are BM.

The Weasel said that the discrepancy between the different Damage Meters is because your own personal Damage Meter guides itself by the Combat Log info and if a fight is taking place away from you so that the Combat Log cannot receive info then your Damage Meter will be inaccurate.

By increase the range of your Combat Log, it will fix this issue.

That is if what SixOfNine said does indeed work.

Recount also has an option to modify that range for you without doing it by hand.

If you are a hunter, make sure merge pet data is in deed turned on, other wise you will seem lower then your total dps actually is.

SWStats also requires that everyone in the group/raid be using it to be accurate.

As for myself, I use Recount. =)

I use KTH and have been happy with it... Something that concerns me, though, is that I read the next major patch (2.4) is going to change the combat log all up. All these damage meter addons are going to be borked, aren't they? And I have several other addons which use the combat log that I'd HATE to live without. Ugh.

EDIT:
Oops! I should have said I used DamageMeter (including with the Cosmos pack) and have been happyp with it. But, I do use KTH as well.

Damage meters are overrated. I'd rather have someone do decent damage and not steal aggro from the tank than some nub trying for top in damage.

It's one of the only ways to quantify DPS's input. Healers/Tanks are generally obvious (whether a tank lives and manages to hold aggro).

Most damage meters have a range issue. There is one that guild leaders generally use that has a much larger range and therefore is somewhat more accurate - but this relies on some sort of server and is far too complicated for me to think about. Can't even remember what it's called.

Thing with damage meters is not only are they all inaccurate (the further away from the person who's recording the damage, the lower the damage) but they don't take into consideration things like CC. You don't want people assigned to CC in raids worrying about whether their DPS is good enough. We've had to boot people from raids before because of this, I remember one mage that wouldn't stop AOEing his way through Kara, and completely ignored his threat. He ended up being kicked out of the guild, DPS is important, but not at the expense of continually wiping the entire raid.

Most of the time we just reset damage meters before each boss encounter. Aside from checking to make sure some idiot isn't afk on guitar hero, the only reason we have them now is to gear check a raid to make sure we have the dps to take on our next goal. Posting your meter into raid or guild chat is very likely going to be greeted with derision and scorn.

I like recount because it gives me charts and graphs. I'm a MM hunter and rely on more than just one button and I like to see the effects that tweaking my play has during down times. I don't have to wait for webstats to be posted.

It also tells me what I already know. Last night was my first time into TK and I was inefficient on the trash. Most of the raid had been in scouting A'lar and Void Reaver and had cleared the trash before, so I was way down the meters. Caught myself and climbed back to #3 behind the two other (far better geared, and, well, better all around) hunters by the end of the night.

It's a nice tool to make sure you're performing, and between the instant feedback and the deeper analysis post-raid you can pinpoint your weaknesses, if you are trying to improve. I know I don't pop kill command or my cooldowns enough.

I'll try to remember to post it, but I have a macro that I used to replace my steady shot.

What it does is turn off error messages then tries to pop my rapid fire and trinkets in turn.

It then fires a steady shot and turns the error messages back on.

The reason for turning off the error messages is I don't need constant "this isn't ready" popping up on my screen every time I steady shot.

The effect is I never miss a cooldown on my rapid fire or trinkets. This does mean I lose my choice of when and where to use them too, but as I was inefficient at remembering cooldowns and dislike using more addons than absolutely necessary it did result in vastly improving my DPS.

Most non-hunters dont have "merge pets" turned on for whichever damage meter they use. I bet that is why you are seeing the discrepancies. Ive been happy with SWstats and find it to be worlds better than KLH.

SWStats also requires that everyone in the group/raid be using it to be accurate. So does KTH, but SWstats is supposedly much better than KTH in dealing with situations where other people in the raid dont have SWstats, including the fact that SWstats reads KTH data.

I havent used recount before, but the posts in this thread have convinced me to give it a spin.
